Yangshuo is famous for many things, namely getting scammed, karst mountains, riding bikes, riding motorbikes, and getting scammed. Now whilst riding motorbikes is definitely one of the most fun of these activities, it does raise the possible of getting scammed. Here’s our guide in how not to get scammed when renting or riding a bike in Yangshuo.
Renting a scooter
Most of the people that rent motorbikes in Yangshuo are tossers, and will try to rip you off. Although it annoying when someone tries to rip you off, at least it is an authentic Yangshuo experience. There’s one older lady that parks her bikes next to KFC who is pretty cool, or if your hostel rents bikes it’s a good bet. Otherwise, assume you will be robbed.
How much does it cost to rent a scooter in Yangshuo?
It should cost no more than RMB 70 per day to rent a scooter in Yangshuo, although this will include you bringing it back filled up with gas.
Let them see you take pictures of the scooter
Let them see you take photos of the problems the bike already has, or you can kish your deposit goodbye. If the scooter is already scratched there’s every chance the friendly locals will still blame you for it.
DO NOT LEAVE YOUR PASSPORT
When you rent a scooter in Yangshuo do not leave your passport, or you give them a license to rip you off. Either pay the money or leave something you are prepared to lose if they act like dickheads, which they might.
Do not hit anyone
This might sound obvious, but the sad fact in Yangshuo is that there is an organized scam where an old lady will pretty much jump in front of your bike, and then you pay the inflated ‘hospital bill’. In 2016 a French guy had to pay $3000 before he was allowed to leave in a blatant scam. Why did the world not hear about this? It’s a small town, what can we say.
In fact don’t break anything in Yangshuo
There’s another Yangshuo scam where in the countryside farmers will put something across the road that you inevitably break when you go over it. They shout and scream, you being nice stop, and then you are surrounded and asked to pay a huge fee to replace whatever crap you allegedly broke. General rule of thumb: if a local in Yangshuo is yelling at you, drive off as quickly as possible.
